Saxman Slim has also developed an after-school program of music instruction, named The Hit Kit, using the students' tastes as a basis for study. Every generation of youth claims the latest commercial music available as its own. The excitement generated by a workshop that legitimizes their culture can be harnessed to motivate learning. Many children have an intense interest in the music from radio and their CD collections but have no outlet for participation.

A selected group of three or four students meet for an hour each week in a computer-based music studio. The Instructor (Slim) will break down a song chosen by the students into components of melody, harmony, bass line, drum beat, etc., and assign each student a specific part. The student will receive a practice CD with separate tracks of the assigned part both isolated and missing. After a week of practice at home, each student should be prepared to combine his/her part with the ensemble to create a performance that may be recorded to CD. There will be periodic informal band showcases for family and friends.

Any vocalist or non-beginner instrumentalist is elibigle. The mechanics of a particular instrument will be the responsibility of the student. Students can either choose their group or be assigned by ability and ensemble role. Even if the student plays an instrument that is not often represented in their chosen musical genre, there is plenty of material available such as the melody line or background riffs.
