Saving "Simple" Stationery.

Stationery using just the Format and Insert menu selections of OE can be referred to as "Simple" as opposed to the Stationery acquired and used from Newsgroups and Websites.
If it is desired to save "simple" stationery, there are 2 possibilities.
Clicking on "Save" will put the stationery in the "Drafts" folder.
From there it can be used only once.
If it is desired to use the stationery many times in the future, or keep it in a more permanent place, click on "Save As", give the stationery a name and save it in a separate folder, preferably in My Documents.
It is recommended that the folder C:/My Documents / My Stationery be created to hold saved stationery.
To use stationery from this folder, simply open the My Stationery folder in My Documents and click on the desired message. It will open in OE.

What is REAL!! "Stationery"?
Stationery is the e-mail which presents the author's special elaborations.
It can be graphic only in nature, or can contain sound and varied animation.
The stationery itself is generated by a script, similar to the html code that is used to generate webpages.
We are talking about stationery that "does something", not "simple" stationery containing a single graphic or simple background.
Stationery e-mail is e-mail that may contain many features or just a few, but almost always contains a background color or background picture, some music and some animation.
It can be static or dynamic - either it just sits there and looks pretty, or the stationery does something - like scroll, pop- up, ripple, etc.
Stationery is generated in e-mail by "scripts".

What is a "script"?

You'll hear lots of talk about "scripts" in the stationery newsgroups.
The word "script" really is a misnomer and is used incorrectly.
Generally we refer to an entire e-mail or stationery as a script.
This is actually incorrect.
The real "script" part is what you find between the tags when you do a CTRL-F2 while viewing the stationery in OE.
The rest is HTML or style information.

NewsGroups.

The following links open up Outlook Express to a few of my favorite Stationery NewsGroups.

What are "Newsgroups"?

A Newsgroup is a part of the Internet that allows users to "post" and "reply to" messages from other users.
Newsgroups provide a way to quickly meet and communicate with people from all over the world who share the same interests, without ever having to leave the computer.
One can communicate with them at anytime.
(By the way, one can read what others are posting without responding.)
The great thing about newsgroups is that anyone can participate, though not all Internet service providers offer access to every newsgroup.
Stationery Newsgroups are those where people create and post e-mail stationery.
They also use it as a forum to discuss stationery creation, scripts, sounds, images etc. used in stationery.

Using Newsgroup Stationery.

Click on a newsgroup link, such as one of the above.
From the list that comes up in OE, select a message - the larger ones are stationery.
There are two methods of altering the original message to make it personal.
The first involves editing the HTML code of the message.
The second does not require the editing of the HTML code, but does not always work.

(1) Make sure OE is full screen. Click "Forward" to get the 3 tabs at the bottom. Click the "Source" tab.
Delete from
"---Original Message..." to and including "</DIV><BR></DIV>".
This generally involves 4 or 5 lines of code. Click the "Preview" tab to see the altered message. Add new message and images in "Edit" or "Source", delete "Fwd" and send.

(2) Click "Forward" to get the 3 tabs. Click the "Edit" tab.
Delete "Original Message" and the addressee information.
Add own message and images, delete "Fwd" and send.

Previewing Newsgroup Stationery Before Sending.

In the Outlook Express compose window the three tabs at the bottom are EDIT, SOURCE, and PREVIEW.
As the stationery is composed, click on the PREVIEW tab to preview.
You must be in EDIT mode in order to send the post.

Saving Newsgroup Stationery

If it is desired to use the "new" Stationery again in the future, it can be saved as shown below.

SAVE AS STATIONERY will only save the most basic stationery, not the complicated stationery found on the newsgroups.

The best way to save Newsgroups stationery is to:
1. Highlight the stationery or have it open.
2. Use "Save As" ("Save" will only save it to the Drafts folder, where it can be used once and done).
3. Give the stationery a name or accept the suggested name.
4. Save the stationery in a special folder created in C:/My Documents such as "My Stationery". Now the "used" stationary is "new" and it can edited and sent as an original.
To use stationery from this folder, simply go to the folder in My Documents and click on the desired message. It will open in OE.

Another place to save stationery where it can be retrieved easily is to save it in the following folder:

C:/Program Files/Common Files/Microsoft Shared/Stationery

If it is saved in this folder it can be retrieved in OE from "Message / New Message Using". A simple process.

What is "Website Stationery"?

Microsoft Outlook Express is a very popular E-Mail program.
A lot of people are using this program to send E-Mail to their friends and family.
Unfortunately, many people don't explore the full potential of this powerful program.
They send textual messages.
These are fine, but Outlook Express offers something more - Stationery.
Stationery provides such things as background, sound or music, and font control to which you add your own text.
Stationery allows you to be more expressive than you can be with just plain text.
Outlook Express makes a few Stationeries available for free, but these are not very exciting.
Fortunately, there are a number of people who enjoy making Stationeries and sharing them.
Some of the Stationeries that are available are fantastic and are well worth getting and using.
These can be found on Stationery Websites, such as those listed below.
Stationery creators make and post their creations on these sites on the Internet for the express purpose of having them copied to be personalized by those who are interested.

Using Website Stationery

The best way to useStationery Web Site stationery is to:
1. Copy the Stationery to the Desktop.
2. Click on the Desktop icon and the Stationery will open as a group of items.
3. "Select all" and copy to the folder

"C:/Program Files/Common Files/Microsoft Shared/Stationery".

It should save as one item with the original name.
To use the Stationery, click on Message/New Message Using/Select Stationery.
Browse for the desired stationery file.
Click on the file, then OK.
The stationery should now be in the compose window.
Make whatever text changes desired and SEND.

Previewing Stationery Before Sending.

In the Outlook Express compose window the three tabs at the bottom are EDIT, SOURCE, and PREVIEW.
As the stationery is composed, click on the PREVIEW tab to preview.
You must be in EDIT mode in order to send the post.

Saving Stationery From Websites:
Generally the best place to save Web Site Stationery is the same folder that holds the News Group Stationery:

C:/My Documents / My Stationery

To use stationery from this folder, simply go to the folder and click on the desired message. It will open in OE.

Setting up OE and IE for Stationery

In order to properly use Outlook Express for stationery creation and stationery saving a few settings in Outlook Express and Internet Explorer need to be checked to:
1. Enable you to save images and sounds from other stationery.
2. Allow you to preview your own stationery before sending.
3. Allow you to reply using stationery in a message thread.

Open Outlook Express and click on TOOLS/OPTIONS/GENERAL. At the bottom of the window, make sure that both the OE Mail Handler and News Handler are the default mail programs. This will be indicated by the two "Make Default" buttons being grayed-out. If they aren't, click them and APPLY the change. Click OK.
Click on TOOLS/OPTIONS/SEND.
Insure "Reply to messages using the format in which they were sent" is unchecked.
If not, uncheck it and APPLY the change. Click OK.
Click on CREATE MAIL.
When the compose window appears, click on FORMAT and click on "Rich Text (HTML)".
A dot should appear in front of the selection.
Click on VIEW .
Insure SOURCE EDIT is checked.
After you do this, the three tabs will appear at the bottom of the compose window.
Click on TOOLS/OPTIONS/SECURITY.
Make sure the Internet Zone option is indicated.
Remove the check, if any, from the "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus".
Although not strictly a requirement for viewing stationery, this change will enable you to receive and save scripting or executable attachments in e-mail.

Open Internet Explorer and click on TOOLS/INTERNET OPTIONS/SECURITY.
Make sure the Internet Zone security is set to Default Level (Default Level button should be grayed-out).
If not click the Default Level button.

"Flash" (Flash Shockwave Plugins) is used a lot in stationery in the newsgroups.
It is also very popular on the web. You can get the latest Flash player at MacroMedia.com.

Saving the Components of Stationery

In order to save components of a message the following settings must be set in Outlook Express:
Click on Tools/Options/Send, the Mail Sending Format and News Sending Format should be checked at "Plain Text" . Click "Apply" and "OK".
Open the message with the components to be saved. Click "Forward".
Click File/Save Attachments.
The dialog box will have the components of the stationery.
Highlight the ones desired to save, designate where to save them and click Save.
URGENT!! AFTER SAVING THE COMPONENTS THE TWO SETTINGS MUST BE RETURNED TO "HTML"!!

"Sending Stationery To Non-OE Users.
One method. Quick and simple.
Create the message in Outlook Express.
Don't send, just click on File/Save As...
Use "whatever name" plus an mht extension (all in quotes).

For example: "Blue Moon.mht"

The quotes prevent a default extension from being added to the filename.
Hit the save button and it's ready to send as an attachment.
No need to rename after saving.
